School of Excellence in Artic and Antarctic Learning (SEAL)
SEAL is a national, interdisciplinary research school in polar research that brings together five Swedish universities.
SEAL – School of Excellence in Arctic and Antarctic Learning – is a doctoral research school funded by the Swedish Research Council, starting in 2026. The research school brings together the University of Gothenburg, Uppsala University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Chalmers University of Technology, and Mid Sweden University in a joint educational and research environment with a total capacity of 15 PhD students.
Mid Sweden University contributes research on sustainable tourism, Indigenous issues, polar law, and unique sub-Arctic field environments, where doctoral students in the research school can work at the interface between natural sciences, engineering, and the social sciences. Through collaboration with the partner universities, Mid Sweden University contributes to joint courses, cross-institutional supervision, and the development of interdisciplinary components within doctoral education.
A central feature of SEAL is that each PhD project will bridge at least two disciplines, and the programme is designed to integrate perspectives from natural sciences, engineering, and the social sciences.
