Study motivation, study rest and leadership in the classroom
This project focuses on students' study calmness and motivation as well as teachers' leadership at two schools in Sundsvall municipality and is carried out with action research.
According to the School Act, all students in Sweden have the right to an equivalent education and the school must compensate for students' different backgrounds and prerequisites (Skollagen, SFS 2010:800). The situation in Sweden, however, shows strong connections between socio-economic background and children's grades from primary school. Low or incomplete grades are five to six times more common among children from working-class homes compared to children of senior civil servants. Students with a Swedish background have better grades on average than students with a foreign background (SCB, 2022). The Swedish National Agency for Education warns of increasing school segregation and sees the teacher shortage and growing inequality as major problems in Swedish schools. In order to give all students the opportunity to succeed and to create study anxiety for them, it is important that the school builds safe environments, supportive structures and that teachers are given the opportunity to develop skills and participate in development projects. This project focuses on students' study calmness and motivation as well as teachers' leadership at Gångvikens and Ljustadalen schools. Both schools are within the so-called The SEKOM area in Sundsvall municipality, which is why the focus of the project is particularly important and that it is in demand by representatives of the schools. The project will be carried out as with action research, because questions and development are based on the needs of the labor law.
Planning, observation, reflection and action return cyclically, there
researchers (two senior researchers – one licentiate) and staff together reflect on results and find ways forward for sustainable quality development. The staff's documentation of the progress in the business, with video diaries, field notes, etc., is the basis for group discussions where experience-based knowledge and theory meet.
