Aim

The aim of the course is to provide the student with an advanced understanding of qualitative methods and their assumptions as related to the theory of knowledge.

Course objectives

Upon completion of the course, within the following areas, the doctoral student will be able to:

Knowledge and understanding:
- present advanced knowledge about the assumptions of qualitative methods related to the theory of knowledge,
- describe how a qualitative research design is planned and developed,
- explain methods and approaches to analysis,
- discuss aspects of quality in qualitative methods.

Competence and skills:
- within your own subject domain, identify when qualitative methods are suitable within the research, and justify the choice of method,
- analyse collected data using qualitative methods and communicate findings of the analyses and their credibility.

Judgement and approach:
- demonstrate an ability to identify, formulate and apply relevant questions
and problem formulations within the context of qualitative methods,
- critically discuss and evaluate the similarities and differences between various qualitative methods,
- reflect on and evaluate the quality of studies that have used qualitative methods.

Content

The course includes:
- theory of knowledge perspectives in qualitative methods,
- choice of research design, research methodology, including selection procedure, data collection methods and data analysis,
- overview of different qualitative analysis methods, and approach to analysis,
- aspects of quality in qualitative methods.

Entry requirements

A person meets the entry requirements for the course if he or she has been admitted to a third-cycle study programme and will be given credit for the course in that study programme.

Lectures, group work and seminars.

Examination form

The summative assessment is done via two group assignments and an individual assignment with an individual oral seminar.
