Aim

The aim of the course is to make the student well prepared to use basic and advanced drawing techniques for design work in the design process.

Course objectives

The student shall:
- demonstrate an understanding of basic perspective theory
- demonstrate the ability to use one-, two- and three-point perspective
- be familiar with freehand drawing.
- demonstrate an understanding of the value of sketching as visualization method and tool in a product development process
- demonstrate an understanding of basic rendering
- be able to carry out rendered sketches using marker and pastel painting techniques
- be able to carry out appealing design presentations where rendering, perspective images, descriptions of function, exploded view drawings and user images are included

Content

Module 1: Basic perspective theory
- One-, two- and three-point perspective
- Geometric and organic shapes in perspective
- Describing shape using 'wire modelling'
- Concept sketch as a tool in the design process
- Basic freehand drawing
- Composition.

Module 2: Basic rendering
Surfaces, volumes, lighting, shine, reflection and shadow. Introduction to marker and pastel technique. Material reproduction. Backgrounds, assembly.

Module 3: Design presentation
Visualization of design proposals using different analogue techniques. Description of function, user description. Exploded view drawing. Views, headings and explanatory texts using reference arrows. Layout and graphical form, assembly.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The teaching consists of seminars and workshops where everyone participates, compulsory attendance. In addition to teacher-supervised time, the course is carried out as independent studies.
