Aim

The course should provide the student with basic skills in the Swedish language. The emphasis of the course is on oral skills. The student will acquire a basic knowledge of the structure of Swedish and be able to use Swedish in everyday situations.

Course objectives

After completing the course, the student should be able to:
-apply the rules of Swedish word order in statements and in different types of questions,
-explain and apply the most frequent grammatical structures of Swedish,
-use common everyday Swedish words and phrases,
-make themselves understood in Swedish, both orally and in writing, in everyday situations,
-understand simple written and spoken texts on everyday topics.

Content

The course includes teaching and practical exercises in oral and written communication. The course provides basic knowledge of the structure and vocabulary of Swedish. The student is also given training in listening comprehension and reading texts.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

The teaching consists of lectures and group exercises. Using web-based materials, students practice pronunciation and practical language skills. Attendance is compulsory.

Examination form

M110: Examination, 7.5 Credits
Grade scale: Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.

Examinations are conducted orally and in writing throughout the course. The course ends with a written examination.

Students have the right to a regular examination in connection with the course and two additional examinations within one year. These examinations must be based on the same course literature. Students who have failed a course or part of a course at least twice have the right to request that another examiner be appointed, unless there are special reasons against this. The request for a new examiner must be made in writing to the body that appoints the examiner. A candidate who has passed an examination may not be re-examined for a higher mark.

If the student has a decision from the coordinator at Mid Sweden University about educational support in case of disability, the examiner has the right to provide the student with an adapted examination.

The grades A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F may be given for the course (A=excellent; B= very good; C=good; D= satisfactory; E= sufficient; Fx=insufficient /complementary work needed; F=insufficient). Thus, on this scale, the grades A through E represent pass levels, whereas Fx and F represent fail levels.

Examination restrictions

Students admitted to the previous version of the course are entitled to examine 3 times within 1 year according to that syllabus. Thereafter, students are transferred to this syllabus.

Grading system
