Aim

With a focus on oral proficiency, the course is designed to help the student acquire basic proficiency in Swedish. The student will acquire a basic knowledge of the structure of the Swedish language and an ability to use Swedish in everyday situations.

Course objectives

Having finished the course, the student will be able to
- make themselves understood in written Swedish as well as in spoken Swedish,
as used in everyday communicative situations
- understand basic written and spoken texts
- account for and apply the most frequently used grammatical structures in Swedish
- account for some elements of Swedish culture

Content

The course consists of lectures, lessons, and practical exercises in oral and written communication. The course provides an introduction to the structure and vocabulary of the Swedish language and to the Swedish society. The student also receives training in listening and reading comprehension.

Selection rules and procedures

The selection process is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance and the local order of admission.

Teaching form

Teaching comprises lectures, lessons, group exercises, and various other activities. Attendance is compulsory.

Examination form

Students’ oral and written proficiency will be continuously assessed.

Apart from being entitled to one regularly scheduled examination at the conclusion of the course, the student is entitled to two additional examination occasions, within the span of one year. On all three occasions, the examination should be based on the same texts.

The grades A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F may be given for the course (A=excellent; B= very good; C=good; D= satisfactory; E= sufficient; Fx=insufficient /complementary work needed; F=insufficient). Thus, on this scale, the grades A through E represent pass levels, whereas Fx and F represent fail levels.

Grading system

Seven-grade scale, A, B, C, D, E, Fx and F. Fx and F represent fail levels.
