Work environment in focus: When the results are conversations – this is noticeable in everyday life
How does an employee survey become more than numbers and charts? For Richard Thornberg, STUA, it's about conversations, repetition and small changes that actually make a difference in the working day.
When the results of the employee survey are to be taken care of during the department day, there is now a clearer structure – and greater commitment. Richard Thornberg feels that the way of working has matured over time.
"It works better every time. At first, it can be a bit slow to start, but after a while everyone joins in and discusses the results. It feels like most people think it's both rewarding and fun," he says.
Important with repetition
The conversations during the department day have also affected how work environment issues are allowed to take place in everyday life. Even if everything doesn't stick right away, Richard Thornberg believes that the process still makes a difference.
"To some extent, it has affected how we talk about the work environment. There are many small points that are raised, and it can be difficult to think about everything all the time. I think that repetition is important for it to really become part of the way of working.
Keeping meeting times and taking micro-breaks
And it is precisely the small changes that are perhaps the most noticeable. After working further with the results, the group has become more aware of things such as meeting times and vulnerability in case of absence.
"We think more about keeping the meeting time and spreading knowledge, so that we don't become too dependent on individuals. For example, I have started to train a colleague in tasks that previously only I have done. Personally, I've also gotten better at taking micro-breaks, which makes me feel more alert during the day.
The view of the employee survey as a tool has also changed.
"Absolutely. It is taken more as a natural part of our work now than before, and with that comes greater commitment. It becomes easier to identify both challenges and things we actually do well.
Starting point for conversations
In this way, the examination is not a finished step – but a starting point for conversations that continue, even after the ward day.
