How could the Sundsvall campus be made even nicer and better? Students in industrial design have taken on this challenge on behalf of the Campus of the Future project.

With thorough research, sketching, site investigations, interviews, inventories and external monitoring, the final-year students at Industrial Design have finally come up with five different proposals for how the campus environment can be developed. Their starting points have been five predetermined assignments: to develop Holmgården, create a winter garden, take advantage of the proximity to the Selånger River, develop the outdoor and indoor environment at the restaurant in the N building, create outdoor social areas and develop more proposals for green spaces and social meeting places within the campus area. They have now presented their proposals and who knows, maybe one day they can become a reality.

Holmgården 4.0

In their project work, a group of four students have created a vision where Holmgården is upgraded to an oasis of glass, water and plants on four floors, or more. They have designed a large, open building according to the concept of flexible "buildings within the building". Inside, studying, talking, research and art will meet in an area of just over 3,000 square metres. Workspaces that encourage movement, such as table tennis, billiards, shuffleboard, gym, yoga and sauna, are also part of their exciting concept.

Conservatory

Another group has been working on a conservatory that will be a free-standing building in glass. The building has three floors, including a basement, which connects it to the culverts under the campus buildings. The conservatory's intended location is the car park in the middle of Åkroken, Campus Sundsvall, and inside there will be a constant summer with a lot of vegetation, regardless of the season. Inside there are cozy living areas and a café.

Harness the potential of the Selånger River

This project group took advantage of the potential of the river that winds around the campus. In their proposal, wide stairs and walkways that are built out into the water have been combined with a row of small, red "cabanas", which in fact will serve as group rooms for the students. Along the walking paths, garden furniture is placed and the vegetation around the river is used as an integral part of the concept.

Improve and update the outdoor environment between the restaurant and the Selånger River

A group has developed a proposal for an expanded restaurant section that will be located at the far end of the "headland" in the river, where the N building is located. Some of the starting points have been that there should be a view of the river, aesthetic appeal and a place for art and other exhibitions. The result they present is an extension with large windows that follow the round shape of the N building. Under the suspension bridge, they have also placed lanterns that illuminate, reflect in the water and expand the experience of the room. The roof is covered with a grass-like material that blends in with the greenery.

Outdoor social areas

In the middle of campus Åkroken, surrounded by the campus buildings, a group proposes a place for socializing and group work. With weather-protected living areas with lighting, garbage disposal, barbecue area, charging point for electric bikes, various seating, plants and swivel outdoor armchairs with attached work tables, the aim is to create a meeting place close to nature for socializing and conversation.

More green spaces and social areas within the campus area

We feel good about being outdoors, it reduces stress and promotes both mental and physical health – this is the starting point for this group's project work, which aims to develop more green spaces and social areas within the campus area.  In their project, they have played with modernist shapes and different solutions for patios with wind protection. With its design, the place wants to promote relaxation, peace and quiet and function as a social meeting place with green spaces and not least a large chessboard with spectator stands.
