Representatives from Mid Sweden University's management participate in the new seminar series launched by the Swedish Gender Equality Agency (JäMy). The purpose of the series is to provide support for the gender mainstreaming assignment that all universities and colleges have had since 2016.

"The initiative is aimed specifically at the management functions of the higher education institutions and includes four seminars, the first of which has been held and the remaining three will be held next year. Gender equality, equal opportunities and inclusion are important areas and it is very good that the Swedish Gender Equality Agency has initiated this seminar series. says Anna Olofsson, incoming Deputy Vice-Chancellor who will participate in all training sessions.

The starting point is to integrate a gender equality perspective into regular activities and the regular process for planning and follow-up. Since gender equality is created where ordinary decisions are made, resources are allocated and norms are created, a gender equality perspective must be included in the daily work.

"Gender mainstreaming means that a gender perspective is included in all decision-making, at all levels and at all stages of the process, by the actors involved in the decision-making process – from proposal, to implementation and evaluation. Therefore, it is important that management functions have knowledge and own the issue, says Lasse Reinikainen, coordinator for equal opportunities and gender mainstreaming at Mid Sweden University.

From Mid Sweden University's side, in addition to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, Dean, Heads of Faculty Office, coordinators and possibly some additional management functions will participate in one or more seminars. The aim of the seminar series is to:

  • develop the work on gender equality together with colleagues from other higher education institutions to achieve higher goal fulfilment
  • deepen, concretize and make visible challenges and possible solutions in the work with gender mainstreaming
  • create better conditions in the work by involving more management and key functions
  • take part in research and contribute to knowledge production about what creates change for an equal academy.
