Accessibility statement for the learning platform Canvas
Mid Sweden University wants as many people as possible to be able to use our learning platform.
This report describes how the university complies with the law on accessibility to digital public services regarding the learning platform, any known accessibility problems and how you as a user of Canvas can report deficiencies to us so that they can be rectified.
How accessible is the learning platform?
The learning platform is partly compliant with the requirements of the Act (2018:1937) on accessibility to digital public services. We are aware that parts of the learning platform are not fully accessible, mainly in terms of different types of material and content published there. We work continuously to develop accessibility.
Read Canvas own information about the accessibility of the learning platform.
How do we work to increase accessibility?
To increase the comprehensibility of the information contained in the learning platform, a template with a common basic structure is used to facilitate navigation and recognition between course rooms and clarify contact paths.
What can you do if you can't use parts of the LMS?
If you experience shortcomings in the accessibility of the material you have access to in the learning platform, there may be good reasons for this. A number of resources in teaching are exempt from the legal requirement, as they are beyond the control of the university.
The accessibility requirements do not apply to the following resources:
- Video linked to or republished from, for example, YouTube
- Material that comes directly from teaching material publishers or equivalent
- Live media or media that is of a temporary nature.
Despite this, it may be possible to get help with accessibility if deficiencies occur by contacting both the course coordinator via the inbox in Canvas and pukontakt@miun.se.
Report shortcomings in the accessibility of the learning platform
Mid Sweden University constantly strives to improve the accessibility of the learning platform. If you notice issues that aren't described on this page, or if you believe we don't meet the requirements of the law, let us know that the problem exists.

Technical information on the accessibility of the learning platform
Mid Sweden University's goal is to achieve at least basic accessibility according to the criteria in WCAG 2.1 at level AA. However, the learning platform does not yet meet all the accessibility criteria in WCAG 2.1. and is therefore only partially compatible with the Act on Accessibility to Digital Public Services. The parts that do not yet meet the requirements are described below.
Non-compliance with legal requirements
The content described below is not fully accessible in one way or another. Through training, information campaigns and support for pedagogical development, we work continuously to address known accessibility problems.
Non-compliance with legal requirements exists for:
- There may be sections with a lack of contrast between text and background.
- There may be videos and audio files that lack subtitles and/or lack audio quality.
- Images may lack alt text.
- Canvas contains many documents that are uploaded and published in each course. These documents may have accessibility shortcomings.
- Images in some PDF documents may be missing or have incorrect alt text.
- The reading order may be incorrect in PDF documents.
- Some documents have been scanned but not OCR processed, which means text is presented in image format.
- Tables in Canvas and in documents may lack or have an incorrect heading structure.
- Language indications may be missing if parts of the text are in a language other than the page as a whole.
- LaTex documents may have a low degree of accessibility.
- Links may be difficult to read or inadequately described, i.e. the purpose of the link is not clear.
How the learning platform was tested
The learning platform Canvas contains a function to check accessibility. The project for the implementation of Canvas has manually reviewed a number of course rooms in the learning platform, and in collaboration with teachers evaluated the accessibility control that exists in the learning platform. We have also taken part of Canva's documentation on how the platform's technology and interface itself works in terms of accessibility.
Mid Sweden University encourages teachers to continuously use the accessibility check function in their course rooms. This is done as part of guides and training around Canvas. The goal is for all teachers to continuously work with this functionality to discover and remedy any shortcomings.
