Municipalities are, around the world, the political entities closest to citizens. They often have their own political government, leadership, a degree of local autonomy, and responsibility for delivering key public services.

In this lecture, Gustav focuses on how Swedish municipalities are governed and the services they provide to their residents. By comparing municipalities with one another, as well as examining developments over time, valuable new insights can be gained. Gustav highlights several policy areas at the core of the welfare state as particularly important for advancing this understanding. The services municipalities offer are influenced both by external circumstances and by the political leadership in power. At the same time, the importance of individual politicians’ priorities should not be underestimated.
