Announcement
- The vacant PhD position is advertised.
- During the recruitment process, the candidates are interviewed and ranked. One person is proposed for the position.
Information for third‑cycle education coordinators

Admission
- The proposed person is admitted to doctoral education by the Council for Third-Cycle Education.
- The proposed person is employed by the department concerned. In cases where the person in question has another employment and conducts his/her doctoral studies as externally funded, an agreement is drawn up between the higher education institution and the employer.
- The new doctoral student is introduced to his/her new position.

Beginnings
- The doctoral student begins his/her doctoral studies.
- The doctoral student should have good knowledge of his/her general syllabus.
- In most subjects, the doctoral student presents his/her planned dissertation project during an introductory seminar.
- The doctoral student and the supervisor begin the documentation of the doctoral education in the individual study syllabus.

Halftime
- In most subjects, the doctoral student presents his/her work so far at a half-time seminar.

Final Process
- In most subjects, at the end of his/her doctoral studies, the doctoral student presents a draft thesis containing all the components at a final seminar.
- The doctoral student completes his/her thesis.

- The doctoral student is working on his/her thesis project and is guided via supervision.

- The doctoral student takes third-cycle courses.

- The individual study syllabus is used continuously and specifies the university's and the doctoral student's commitments and specifies the timetable.

- The doctoral student usually has departmental duties. This may include teaching or other commitments.
- The doctoral student participates in the subject- and department-wide activities.
- The doctoral student is invited to participate in the faculty's joint doctoral program.

The illustration of the doctoral student journey is based on the doctoral students who are admitted to the doctoral degree. However, it is also applicable when doctoral students are admitted to a licentiate degree, but then consists of a shorter period of time, fewer courses and a less extensive thesis.
