Dr. Nuno Pereira from Portugal presented “Long Range Communication for Internet of Thing”

Save favourite 9 Nov November 2017

Dr. Nuno Pereira, an adjunct professor at the School of Engineering of the Polytechnic of Porto, is currently visiting STC for a four month long research visit. In November 8, he held a guest lecture for the researchers at STC where he presented his research within Wireless Sensor Networks, Cyber Physical Systems and Internet of Things.

Dr. Pereira also provided an introduction to Low Power WANs (LP-WAN) technologies, a very attractive option to deploy IoT applications that cover distances of several kilometres with minimal infrastructure. He noted that LP-WAN technologies are already being deployed around the world, such as LoRa and SigFox in unlicensed frequency bands and LTE-M and NB-IOT in licensed bands. In his talk, he focused on discussing the details of LoRa and LoRaWAN, a system that just got installed in Sundsvall by the STC Research Centre.

Nuno also presented Openchirp, a platform that has been developed by the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittburgh, where Nuno was on a visiting scholar earlier this year. Openchirp is a management platform for LP-WAN network that everyone can use to manage their LP-WAN devices.

Every six year researchers at the School of Engineering of the Polytechnic of Porto do research visit to different universities abroad. This year it was time for Nuno and he made his first research visit to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, US. The next visit went to the STC Research Center in Sundsvall.

 - I had heard about Mid Sweden University and STC Research Centre from a colleague and contacted Prof. Mikael Gidlund with a request to visit STC and I was gladly invited to Sundsvall in August. The researchers at STC work within the same research area as me, so it has been a great opportunity to meet other researchers with similar interests and exchange knowledge, Nuno says.

During his time in Sundsvall Nuno has already developed some joint research that lead to the submission of two publications together with the STC researchers and hopefully this is the start of a new collaboration between the three universities; Polytechnic of Porto, Carnegie Mellon University of Pittsburgh and Mid Sweden University.

Short bio:

Nuno develops research on topics generally related to real-time and embedded systems (applying/developing real-time scheduling theory and practical aspects ranging from operating systems, software development and real-time communication protocols). He contributed to 12 research projects (European and National) and published more than 40 peer-reviewed technical papers. He regularly serves as a reviewer and technical committee member for scientific journals and conferences. Nuno also carried out professional activities related to cyber security, namely security audits for national companies, including one major bank. During 2017, Nuno Pereira was a visiting scholar at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, United States.
