A Swiss Army Knife approach to landscaping
– multifunctional land use design for ecosystem restoration
“29% of our planet´s surface is land. Land-based ecosystems like forests, grasslands, mountains and agroecosystems provide a wide range of ecosystem services that are essential to life on Earth. The fate and wellbeing of humanity is deeply and directly intertwined with that of land.
When land health is declining due to habitat loss, climate change or pollution so is our possibility to obtain products such as food fuel and fibre and regulating services such as climate regulation, air and water purification or erosion and flood control.
The restoration of degraded, damaged, or destroyed ecosystem is thus crucial for a sustained human wellbeing. This lecture will deal with the concept of multifunctional land use and the delicate balancing act of designing land-based systems that may restore ecosystem health and ideally also deliver provisioning ecosystem services.”
