Europe’s largest wind turbine project spreads across the Norwegian mountains along grazing areas that are crucial to the Saami people and their reindeer. Despite massive objections to the project, the state grants permission to erect 151 wind turbines before the case has been fully processed in the court system. The landscape is drastically altered, and the basis for reindeer breeding – and Sami culture – is put at risk in the name of climate change.
The Norwegian Supreme Court later ruled that the wind farm violated the human rights of the Saami people, and hopes of getting the mountains back were rekindled. But when the government sided with the wind power companies and refused to take down the wind turbines, it sparked protests. Instead, the government offers compensation of €14 million to move the grazing areas elsewhere.
‘Let Our Mountains Live’ depicts a people who win the right to their land but are still fighting to be allowed to stay. A tense drama about the green transition and the rights of indigenous peoples in a Europe where the rule of law faces a profound dilemma.
