CHEMical safety through SYStems analysis (CHEMSYS)
CHEMSYS is a research project that explores how system dynamics can strengthen municipal planning and governance for chemical safety.
Using Sundsvall Municipality as a case, the project addresses the challenge of integrating long-term chemical risk reduction with goals for circular economy and sustainable urban development. The project applies a structured systems analysis approach combining cause-and-effect maps (causal loop diagrams), simulation modelling, and backcasting from a 2050 vision of a chemical-safe future. A key focus is identifying how policy measures interact with feedback dynamics, delayed effects, and cross-sectoral dependencies—especially where reused materials may conflict with safety goals.
The project develops future scenarios, system maps, and a prototype simulation tool co-created with stakeholders to test and evaluate policy options. These simulations help the municipality test strategies before implementation and understand possible side effects. CHEMSYS lays the groundwork for a transferable approach that can support other municipalities in navigating complex sustainability and chemical safety challenges.
