Development of Training Modules for BPSD and Alzheimer’s within the HUMAN Project

Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), such as anxiety, aggression, and confusion, are common among older adults with dementia. These symptoms are distressing for those affected and also present major challenges for assistant nurses and other care staff, who often lack sufficient tools to manage these situations in an evidence-based manner.

The purpose of this pre-study is to map and analyze the current level of knowledge among health and social care staff regarding BPSD and Alzheimer’s disease. The study aims to identify knowledge gaps and provide a basis for developing scientifically grounded training initiatives. A key component is to use existing VR technology to design interactive training environments where staff can practice realistic scenarios, develop person-centered communication skills, and understand how environmental factors influence behaviors. The goal is to strengthen staff’s ability to act competently and thereby increase safety for both service users and personnel.

The pre-study is conducted in close collaboration between Härnösand Municipality and Mid Sweden University and serves as a complementary project to the ERDF-funded HUMAN project. The results will form the basis for two scientific publications, project reports, and conference and workshop presentations. The project group will also provide recommendations for future research and development in the field.
