Eco‑democracy and Education
We live in a time when democracy, social inequalities, and environmental issues can no longer be treated as separate concerns within education. How can education contribute to democratic societies that take responsibility for social and ecological matters?
Doing–Thinking–Exploring Ecodemocracy is a project that aims to support students' learning and development in matters relating to democracy and sustainable development by developing research-based educational models (didactic models) for ecodemocracy. The project's objective is to identify opportunities and challenges concerning how ecodemocracy can be lived and learned in educational practices. Furthermore, the ambition is to explore a research methodology focused on doing–thinking–exploring, inspired by posthumanist and new materialism.
By investigating educational practices in which a more-than-human world is recognised as a pedagogical and political participant, the project seeks to develop alternative perspectives on environmental and sustainability education. In addition, it explores the political and ethical tensions that arise when established understandings of education, democracy, and knowledge are challenged.
This exploration takes place in different contexts: a practice-oriented project conducted in collaboration with a compulsory school and an after-school centre in the municipality of Östersund, as well as within teacher education at Mid Sweden University. In parallel, studies are being carried out in Australia in collaboration with Professor Karen Malone, who is also a Visiting Professor at Mid Sweden University.
