Physical Activity on Prescription (PAP) – Opportunities and Barriers in Region Jämtland Härjedalen
Physical activity is of importance for people's health. The implementation of physical activity on prescription (PAP) has been ongoing for 20 years. Yet, significant disparities exist among the regions. Region Jämtland Härjedalen will intensify its PAP efforts in collaboration with Mid Sweden University.
Physical activity has long been recognized as a cornerstone of overall health and well-being. The concept of PAP involves the systematic recommendation of tailored exercise routines based on individual needs and goals, with the primary aim of improving both physical and mental health. PAP is prescribed by healthcare professionals (e.g., doctors, physiotherapists, and nurses) in consultation with the patient, who evaluates the individual's current physical and mental condition. The prescription is then customized to address specific treatment goals.
All regions incorporate PAP into their practice, but the porportion of prescriptions varies significantly. Region JH is among the regions with the lowest proportion of PAP prescriptions (according to self-reported primary care data). The work in the region needs to be strengthened.
The purpose of this study is to identify obstacles and opportunities for the implementation of PAP in Region JH.
A mixed-methods design will be used. By employing a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, the aim is to gather a comprehensive picture that provides a deeper understanding of how healthcare professionals perceive and manage PAP prescription in different parts of the healthcare system. The results can be used to design targeted interventions and support measures that promote PAP prescription across various healthcare contexts. From an organizational perspective, the results may suggest relevant incentives that can motivate and stimulate staff to prescribe PAP.
The study is conducted in collaboration with Region JH, the Chief of Public Health, quality developers, and representatives of the healthcare facilities. These individuals assist in planning and logistics for data collection in various settings.
Target groups: Doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and managerial personnel within Primary Care (health centers, including private ones), day personnel within adult psychiatry, Child Habilitation, and Adult Habilitation in Region JH.
