The impact of climate change and adaptation on health care: challenges and adaptation strategies
Extreme weather and other climate-related events pose major risks that affect human health and put pressure on health services. As the effects of global warming increase, health services will be put under greater pressure due to increased and partly different healthcare needs.
Climate change already poses a risk to human health today and is expected to have an even greater impact in the future. According to the WHO and the Lancet Commission, global warming is the single greatest threat to human health. These changes pose significant challenges for the Swedish health sector, which will have to adapt its activities to deal effectively with the consequences of climate change. This literature review will summarise existing research on the impact of climate change and climate adaptation on health care, as well as challenges and adaptation strategies. A particular focus is on the various conflicting objectives that may arise in the work on climate change adaptation. Furthermore, the synthesis aims to identify important remaining knowledge gaps and issues in the field.
