Welcome to The 17th Polar Law Symposium 2024 in Östersund, Sweden
On 23-25 September, Mid Sweden University will host Polar Law Symposium 2024. We are looking forward to seeing you in Östersund!
Each year the Polar Law Symposium brings a great number of renowned scholars, post-doctoral and doctoral researchers from all across the world to share research-based scientific knowledge on diverse polar relevant issues. This year Mid Sweden University will host the conference and welcome you all to the city of Östersund - located in the middle of Sweden with the mountains and the lake Storsjön just around the corner.
The conference starts with a Welcome Reception in the open air museum of Jamtli on the evening September 23 followed by a full conference programme September 24-25.
The two themes this year are "Implementation of international minority- and indigenous law at national levels" and "Governance, resources, security, and jurisdictional issues in the circumpolar area". You can read more about them below.

Keynote Speakers
James Anaya, 24 september
S. James Anaya, University Distinguished Professor and Nicholas Doman Professor of International Law at University of Colorado is the keynote speaker on the theme "Implementation of international minority- and indigenous law at national levels".
Åsa Larsson Blind, 24 september
Åsa Larsson Blind is the Vice President (and former President 2017–2019) of The Saami Council, representing the National Union of the Swedish Saami People.
Ronán Long, 25 september
Professor Ronán Long, Director of the WMU-Sasakawa Global Ocean Institute and holds the Nippon Foundation Professorial Chair of Ocean Governance and the Law of the Sea is the keynote speaker on the theme "Governance, resources, security, and jurisdictional issues in the circumpolar area".
