Environmental Engineering MA, Spatial Environmental Analysis, 7.5 hp

Spatial analysis can be defined as the application, or development, of techniques to process and analyze spatial data. Or in other words, to use, or develop, tools that can handle geographic information using Geographical Information Systems (GIS). For example, a web map service is a GIS and the directions that are given by the service are created using (automated) spatial analysis. Spatial analysis is applied in all scientific disciplines and there is also a lack of competence in industry due to a rapid increase of use cases, within all sectors.

The structure of the teaching

This course will provide students with knowledge and experience in using diverse GIS-based tools to analyze environmental challenges relevant to their respective fields of study or employment. It is based on recorded lectures and demonstrations that provide insights in, e.g., how to approach an environmental challenge using spatial analysis, how to design a spatially explicity study, how to identify existing, create new, and manage, spatial data, and how to use specific analysis tools. The students will also conduct individual projects. The course is exclusively based on free and open source software.

Entry requirements

Bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits or equivalent, including at least 15 credits in Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering. At least 7.5 credits in GIS, which may be included in the bachelor's degree, or the course Environmental Science MA, Research Skills, 15 credits.
