Background

I have a background of Master of Science from Linköping University (Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering, 1992), and I worked some time in the industry (ABB, Ludvika)1993-1994. I have then progress my knowledge with a Technical licentiate degree from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm (Signal Processing, 1998) and later also a PhD degree from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (Modelling of Non-linear Systems, 2001). After arriving at Mid Sweden University, I have obtaine both Docent degree (Associate Professor, 2008) and now also the Professor's degree in Signal Processing (2013). I am now the highest representative of the research subject Computer and System Sciences at Mid Sweden University, and I am also part of the managerial group of Dept. of Information and Communication Systems (IKS).

During my studies and my research work, I have strived to get to know new environments and absorb new knowledge and tried to move between subjects and applications. Therefore, I have had exchanges at Technische Hochschule Darmstadt (1990-1991), CERN (1991-1992, 1994-1996), University of Maryland (2000), as well as University of Sannio (2003, 2007).

Area of interest

My main research area is Multi-Dimensional Signal Processing where System Modelling and Identification has been a large part. I have during later years applied it to Image and Video Processing, as well as Multi-media Communications. Now I research Multi-Scopic 3D and Light Field Technology: capture, procesing, coding and presentation/visualization.

Research

I am the founder and head of the research group Realistic 3D, and I lead its activities in research projects in collaboration with several industrial partners. We focus our research on

-- Synthesis and capture of 3D images and video
-- Rendering techniques for virtual perspective views
-- Modelling of systems for 3D capture and presentation
-- Coding of 3D images and video
-- 3D quality metrics and assessments
-- Remote control and measurements

In previous research I addressed System Modelling and Identification applied to transfer functions estimations for particle beams (CERN), modelling of hysteresis in superconductors and superconducting devices (EPFL).

Teaching and tutoring

I have taught a fair amount of different courses at Bachelor and Master level, among others Applied Signal Processing, Automatic Control, Automatic and Logic Control, Circuits and Systems, Computer Hardware and Architecture, Digital Electronics, Introduction to Computer Science, Programming in C, Linear and Nonlinear Optimisation, Signal Theory, Signals and Systems, TCP/IP Networking, and Telecommunication - Technologies, Services and Trends. I have also supervised and examined many Bachelor and Master thesis works.

I have also given PhD courses related to our research: Signal Theory, Video Processing and Communication, Video Quality Assessment, and Fundamentals of Realistic 3D. I further teach Scientific Writing and Presentation for all faculty PhD students

Other information

I have since 2013 been head of 3rd cycle education subject Computer and System Science, and since 2020 head of 3rd cycle education subject Computer Technology.
