Research funders are facing unprecedented pressures. Grant application volumes are rising rapidly, highlighting the growing demands placed on research funding and evaluation systems. As funding organisations face record numbers of applications, interest in AI-supported processes is growing rapidly.

Can AI help funding organisations manage increasing proposal volumes while supporting responsible assessment? Which processes may benefit from responsible use of AI, and which decisions should remain firmly in human hands? How are funding organisations approaching issues of governance, transparency, accountability, and trust?

Funding organisations are beginning to explore AI applications for reviewer identification, portfolio analysis, information retrieval, integrity screening, and administrative support. Some are also investigating whether AI can contribute to aspects of research assessment itself.

At the same time, the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) is promoting a shift towards more responsible, qualitative, and contextual approaches to research evaluation that place greater emphasis on human expert judgement and the diversity of research contributions. This raises important questions about the role AI should play in assessment processes.
