In 1642, one of the bloodiest wars fought on the British Isles began: the English Civil War. This course will consider the causes, events, experiences, and the significance of the war. It considers multiple aspects of seventeenth century life: religion, society, war and politics. The study of the English Civil War reveals the dynamic early modern world, whilst also establishing an understanding how our contemporary democratic world came to be.

Utbildningsinformation
This distance course takes place between weeks 24 and 33, and is taught in English. The learning platform will be Canvas, where the schedule, reading materials, assignment submission windows, and other required links will be published.
The course will begin with one live, introductory online lecture in week 24, followed by pre-recorded weekly lectures, approx. 20-30 minutes in length, from week 25 to 31. A final written assessment should be completed by week 33, and as such, a pre-recorded lecture along with an optional online seminar focusing on the final assessment will be scheduled for week 32.
The weekly lectures will become available from 09:00 every Monday morning. Each lecture will have compulsory and supplementary reading associated with the theme of the lecture. The lectures will be paired with a small written reflection or mini-task, such as a page-long reflection, source analysis or a quiz, which will be due on the following Monday.
There will be an optional online drop-in session every week where you can ask any questions on the lectures, readings or assignments. The set day and time will be published along with the schedule.
The majority of compulsory reading is taken from five books, two of which are not accessible online, but available to purchase on Adlibris or Akademibokhandeln. You will be expected to have access to these:
Worden, Blair. The English Civil Wars, 1640-1660. (London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson. 2009)
Braddick, Michael. God’s Fury, England’s Fire. (Penguin Books LTD, 2008).
All other necessary information including schedule and additional sources and reading will be available on Canvas.
