Care encounters in the home environment – Experiences of interaction between older persons and nurses

When older persons and nurses meet in the home, a unique healthcare environment is created, differing from traditional healthcare institutions. For older persons, it means receiving care and support in their own familiar environment, which can enhance their sense of well-being and independence. It also allows them to maintain a greater degree of control over their daily lives and routines. However, the presence of nurses in the home may affect the older person’s privacy and sense of integrity. Maintaining a sense of personal privacy can be challenging when unfamiliar individuals perform caregiving tasks in one’s own home.

To receive and provide care in the home

For nurses, care encounters in the home enable them to work in a more person-centered manner and tailor care to everyone’s unique needs and situation. They gain a deeper understanding of the older person’s life situation, enabling them to provide more effective and targeted care. However, it poses a challenge to navigate between the clinical and private spheres, as well as to adapt care to different home environments, lifestyles, and preferences.

The need for further research

With a growing elderly population and a clear trend towards home-based care, it becomes increasingly crucial to understand the dynamic interactions and experiences that arise when care moves beyond traditional institutional frameworks. As there is a lack of research highlighting these specific care encounters, this project is of great importance to fill that knowledge gap and thereby contribute to a deeper understanding of the care provided and received in the home.

The aim of this research project

The primary aim of this research project is to explore and understand care encounters between older persons and nurses in Swedish home care. These care encounters create a significant platform for information exchange and caregiving. Understanding the dynamics and experiences in these care encounters is crucial for designing a healthcare environment that is effective, respectful, and conducive to the well-being of all parties involved. By exploring and understanding these care encounters, we can identify important insights and best practices that can optimize the quality of care and promote a positive care experience for both older persons and nurses.
