Domestic indoor cultivation
How can food production be moved closer to everyday life and become part of residential environments? This project explores how indoor cultivation can be designed to be accessible, sustainable, and relevant beyond today’s large-scale solutions.
The project focuses on the barriers, opportunities, and design conditions for domestic-scale indoor cultivation in close connection to housing and residential areas. Today, indoor cultivation technologies are primarily developed for large-scale actors, which limits their application in everyday, local contexts. Enabling broader adoption requires a deeper understanding of people’s daily lives, motivations, and practical conditions, as well as inclusive design solutions that are easy to use.
The work is based on a design-led research process with a focus on universal design and is carried out through actor mapping, ethnographic studies, and co-creative workshops. The project is conducted in collaboration with Mid Sweden University and the municipalities of Sundsvall, Örnsköldsvik, and Nordanstig, and aims to establish a foundation for further research and development of sustainable, user-centred solutions for future food systems.
