Circocreation ‑ New ways to use building materials in a circular economy

The construction sector uses large amounts of materials and faces a major transition to reduce its environmental and climate impact. When buildings are renovated or demolished, more materials need to be reused, recycled or given new applications.

CirCoCreation focuses on how cities and local stakeholders can drive this transition together. The project uses so-called living labs, where residents, businesses, public-sector organisations and researchers can develop and test ideas together. This approach helps capture local needs and develop solutions that work in practice.

Mid Sweden University is part of the project and collaborates with KU Leuven in Belgium, the Spanish university UCM, the French non-profit organisation ASCII, the Belgian municipality of Leuven, Sundsvall Municipality, the Belgian non-profit organisation MaterialsBank – Atelier Circuler, and the Swedish companies Flooré AB and Reboard Technology. Together, the project partners are exploring, among other things, how material flows can be tracked and measured, and how new forms of collaboration can contribute to increased reuse and recycling of construction materials.

The project aims to contribute to a more circular ecosystem for construction, where materials are used more efficiently and knowledge and resources can be shared between different stakeholders. The results will also be shared through workshops and exhibitions to engage more people in the transition to a circular economy.
