Background
Lars-Erik got his Ph.D. at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway, with the thesis “On Optimization of Injection Molding Cooling” and since summer 2020, Lars-Erik’s has a position as Professor at the Department of Engineering, Mathematics and Science Education, Campus Östersund, Mid Sweden University.
Area of interest
Lars-Erik's research is focused on additive manufacturing and he has about 20 years of experience in the field. The first projects focused on what was then called "rapid tooling" and the purpose was to implement additive manufacturing in metal in the tool industry. Later, projects in the medical field were initiated where the technology was used to make plastic models, based on the information in X-rays, for example of complicated fractures. In 2007, the world's first A2 machine (Arcam AB, Mölndal) was purchased and this laid the foundation for the research group in additive manufacturing, which Lars-Erik today represents.
Research
The research focuses on additive manufacturing with a special focus on "Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion" (PBF-EB). Historically, the group has worked in several different areas such as medical applications and sports technology, but now the development of new materials for the PBF-EB process is the major part of the research. The hope is that new types of materials manufactured in PBF-EB will give rise to unique products and materials in the future, which until now have not been possible to manufacture. Lars-Erik and his group are today one of a handful of groups in the world that are certified to do this type of development.
Teaching and tutoring
Lars-Erik is a teacher in the areas of manufacturing, additive manufacturing, 3D modeling, reversed engineering and computer aided design. He is responsible for numerous courses on both basic and advanced level and and chair of the subject mechanical engineering.
Other information
Lars-Erik is supervisor for William Sjöström and his work is about process development for various materials manufactured by PBF-EB.
