Historia GR (A), En smak av latin: En introduktion till det latinska språket för humaniorastudenter, 7,5 hp

Latin is not only the language of ancient Rome, medieval scholarship, or the divine liturgy of the Catholic church. It is one of the cornerstones of European civilization, evident already from the number of Latin words we use in everyday life, regardless of what our mother tongue can be. Latin is especially valuable for students and scholars of humanities: a historian could hardly avoid using sources written in Latin; a jurist would not be able to comprehend the Roman Law without understanding its Latin terminology; and a linguist would need Latin to approach its direct descendants, the Romance languages. This course, therefore, offers an opportunity to acquire basic knowledge of Latin grammar and vocabulary, with a specific focus on the needs of humanities students. We will use the most famous textbook, Wheelock’s Latin, which has original Latin readings already in its very first lesson, and which gently introduces its users to the wonderful world of classical antiquity.
