Environmental engineering
Knowledge of how technology and technical systems can contribute to sustainable social development and improved environmental quality is central to the subject of environmental engineering.
Sustainable development of society requires that natural resources are used without depleting them or jeopardising productive capacity in the long term. Furthermore, sustainable development requires social and economic development, the promotion of human health and the preservation of cultural and historical values.
The subject deals with energy and material flows in order to provide knowledge about the management of natural resources and about preventing environmental problems. Therefore, we study how material flows in society can be minimized through cascading, reuse and recycling of products and materials, as well as methods for handling residues and purification. System optimisation and a transition to renewable resources are important elements in teaching. In order to provide an understanding of how new technology and new technical systems are developed and used, innovation diffusion and environment-driven innovation are also treated. Environmental management systems and environmental audits are tools in environmental technology to improve the environmental work of companies, among other things. Knowledge of technology for purification and sanitation is also part of the subject. Some courses, or parts of courses, may be given in English.
Environmental Engineering is offered at undergraduate and graduate level and is linked to the third-cycle subject area of Ecotechnology and Environmental Science. Environmental engineering can be a minor subject within the framework of, for example, natural sciences, technology or social science programmes. Environmental Engineering is the main field of study in the Eco-Engineering programme, 180 credits, and courses in the subject are also included in Ecotechnology, 180 credits, and in the International Master's Programme in Ecotechnology and Sustainable Development , 120 credits . Courses in environmental engineering are given at Mid Sweden University's Campus Östersund and at a distance. At Mid Sweden University, environmental engineering is represented by the professorship in ecotechnology.
