Strategic climate communication
The project will produce new knowledge about how climate strategies and goals can best be communicated at local level in municipalities and implemented in practice.
Global warming continues and action is needed at national, regional and local levels to reach the goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees by 2030. Soon that goal will be out of reach.
Important climate work takes place at the local level in the municipalities. Here, climate strategies, goals, plans and activities are formed to meet the challenges of a warmer climate and to prevent warming.
Some municipalities are working on developing climate strategies and goals, others already have a climate strategy and active climate work that is continuously followed up. The difficulty is often translating the goals of the strategies into action and implementing activities to achieve them. A common challenge for most municipalities is to create awareness of the strategy and commitment to implement it. New research on the role of communication in sustainable development is published continuously, and researchers study the challenges of communicating about complex issues such as climate change and biodiversity. There are many new insights stemming from research that can be used in the project. Communication research shows that many factors can both contribute to and hinder the implementation of goals and strategies internally in organizations, and that managers' and employees' communication is absolutely central to turning a plan into reality.
